Fling Competition Report: October
The end of August bought out the largest turn out of "Flingers". Twelve, many different coloured flings and there bungee lines took up all the space available, leaving one lone electric flyer, Colin, to do his stuff. It was a windy, gusty day with many switches in wind direction. Thank goodness we did not have to change the Bungee lines position, Imagine the chaos as twelve lots of lines across a small field tangled with each other! Nine rounds were flown and this, I think, gave us a good work out as the flying conditions changed for each flight, although the wind strength was your biggest determining factor. What lessons did I learn? Well, do not glide on a spot overhead, it is deceptive, you will fly slowly and therefore be coming down, keep it moving and fly in fairly tight circles, the Fling seems to love circling. Do not get too far down wind of the landing spot, in a good breeze the fling will not penetrate when you are trying to get a final approach flat glide. Again the Flings proved how tough they are, many were speared in on approach, there was I think one mid air and one fling had its tail ripped of by a passing tree. (Strange how quickly they move) This brings up again a gripe of mine, why do so many pilots walk to the landing spots AND STOP THERE, even chatting to others on the spot, whilst other poor souls are trying to get a good, non spearing final approach. Please do not stand around the landing spots whilst others are trying to make a final approach.
